Ms. Rowley and Ms. Eagley have been working on a unit in ELA that aligns to the upcoming Broadway musical, Come From Away. The students have been studying the musical script, music, and storyline…reading several books and articles. In addition, they reached out to our Villa of Hope Agency employees asking them to share their stories…Where were you on 9/11/2001?
Mr. Waller shared that he was in 10th grade, in 2nd period math, 4th from the front on the left side of the room…and will remember the location on this tragic day, forever!
Lisa Roi, watching it on TV, thought to herself…”Is this real or a movie.”
Danielle Roque shared that she was in the 11th grade. She remembers it being a gorgeous day in Rochester. As she heard the news in math class…there were lots of tears, screams, and crying, along with prayers.
Mrs. Caley was homeschooling her two daughters at the time. She remembers turning on the TV and watching together, noting that it would be a bit scary to watch and comprehend. They eventually went out for a walk with their dog to help ease the day after watching the events on this tragic day in history.
Mr. Hartman was a junior in college. He remembers coming together as a nation, and that people were being helpful and kind to each other.
Jennifer Speorl was in her first year of college. Her Father was working at the Villa on this day and shared with Jennifer that he stayed late to help the Villa of Hope youth process their feelings and ensuring safety. There were candlelight vigils and prayers everywhere that evening, creating a sense of pride to be an American.
These are just a few of the many stories shared with our students as they plan and prepare to see the musical in November. Thank you to RBTL for partnering with Villa of Hope School to bring the power of theatre and storytelling to life!
